Mineral painting on canvas made by Navajo artist Sammie Largo. Painting depicts a central Talking God figure with the symbols and objects associated with the Native American Church. Artist often paints themes associated with the healing arts and tradition. Painting is 30 H x 24" W. Painting depicts a central Talking God figures with the symbols and objects associated with the Native American Church. The Talking God figure wears a large feather headdress and a collar while holding feathers and a club (?). A water bird design cuts diagonally across the figure while a second bird design is painted closer to the bottom of the painting. Six silhouettes of human figures are shown at the base of the painting seated within the tipi-shaped body of the central Talking God figure. The Talking God's face seems to depict a garden of some kind (?). Two faint, almost ghost-like heads of other figures flank either side of the central figure. A faint geometric semicircular geometric design arcs above the central figure while a bright circle is offset in the upper proper left corner above the central figure. Most of the painting was done in hues of blue, green, and red with details of yellow, black, blue, orange, white, and brown. Artist Information: Sammie Largo's art represents the healing cycle and tradition. His primary form of art is painting, although he has worked with carving, beadwork, and clay pots. He has no formal training; he is completely self-taught. He used to help his uncle retrieve colored sand for making pigments. He comes from a traditional Navajo religious family. He used to drum for his grandfather when he was 5 years old. He started singing when he was around 6-9 years old, when he was herding sheep. In fact, he has about 40-50 prayer compositions with reel-to-reel recordings at home. Commissions from outlets makes up about 50% of his work. he might keep or give away about 50% of his work and then sell the rest. He puts serial numbers on all his pieces as well as a hallmark as a way to keep a record of all his works. Largo also did the cover art of the Spirit of the Songs
