The Resource To the customers of the Newport Mercury. : Gentlemen and ladies, I once more assume the honour of presenting you with a poetical address, (if it can be so called) on the anniversary of a New-Year. If it is agreeable, I doubt not but you will confer a very generous token of approbation on, gentlemen and ladies, your very obsequious, much obliged, truly humble, and most devoted servant, Eben. Hall, n.c, (electronic resource)

Note
  • Dated [1769?] and ascribed to the press of Solomon Southwick by Alden based on a contemporary ms. annotation on the Newport Historical Society copy. However, textual references suggest that the verses were printed to commemorate the repeal of the Stamp Act which occurred on March 18, 1766. Samuel Hall, older brother of the author, printed the Newport Mercury from April 1763 to March 1768, and it is probable that the verses were printed during those years
  • "The dated Mercury address for 1769 displayed strong loyalty to the crown. Possibly this undated one by Ebeneza Hall was offered also in 1769 in apposition to the Tory sentements of the other."--McDonald
