Biographical or historical data
U.S. Army officer. Graduated from West Point in 1853. Saw frontier duty in western states (1854-1861). Became chief quartermaster of the Army of the Southwest (1861-1862). During the Civil War commanded various units including those in the Armies of the Ohio, Cumberland, Potomac (1861-1864), had full command of the Army of the Shenandoah, the middle Military Division and all U.S. forces west of the Mississippi River (1865). From 1865 to 1869 commanded Military Division and Dept. of the Gulf, 5th Military District, Dept. of the Missouri. Promoted to Lieutenant General in 1869; observed the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71); led Yellowstone Expedition (1877) and became commanding general of the U.S. Army from 1883-1888. Died in 1888.
