Summary
"Soaking the Sun," an acrylic and oil crayon on canvas painted by Navajo artist Garrett Etsitty. Iconography in the painting relates directly to symbols from the Native American Church and includes birds, peyote buttons, a fan, an arrow, a rattle, and a feather. It is painted in the post-graffiti style popular with this artist. Painting was completed January 2013 and is 66" H x 41" W. This large-scale painting depicts iconography directly related to the Native American Church. Two central bird figures, one with folded wings and the other in mid flight, overlap a cluster containing an arrow, a rattle, a feather, and a fan. Underneath the bird figures are a curved row of seven peyote buttons. The background of the painting consists of two large rectangles, one inset within the other. The smaller rectangle is a gradient of purple tones while the larger rectangle is a gradient of turquoise and purple. The background is spatter painted in orange, pink, light blue, green, black, purple, yellow, and tan. The birds, peyote buttons, fan, arrow, rattle, and feather designs are all outlined in a bold yellow border. Swirling designs in purple, pink, and green also surround these designs. The edges of the canvas continue the same gradient pattern as the surface of the painting
