Summary
The increasing use of short wavelengths in systems required to operate in all weather conditions under battlefield environments requires that a commander in the field be able to predict the performance of these systems in the short term. A particular problem is the performance of millimeter and micrometer wavelengths in falling snow. This report presents a predictive model based on the assumption that the transmission like the snowfall intensity, behaves as a Markov chain. The model was developed from data acquired during the SNOW-ONE-A field program, and was tested for a hypothetical weapon system operating in the 8-12 micrometer band. The agreement of theory with measurements is excellent, but the model requires further testing on actual systems
